A foundation of higher learning of The Presbyterian Church USA, Davidson College was established in 1837 by The Concord Presbytery subsequent to acquiring 469 sections of land (1.90 km2) of area from a Revolutionary War administrator, Brigadier General William Lee Davidson, for whom the school is named. The main understudies moved on from Davidson in 1840 and got recognitions with the recently made school seal planned by Peter Stuart Ney, who is accepted by some to be Napoleon's Marshal Ney.

In the 1850s, Davidson overcame money related trouble by initiating "The Scholarship Plan," a project that permitted Davidson hopefuls to buy a grant for $100, which could be reclaimed in return for full educational cost to Davidson until the 1870s. The school's budgetary circumstance enhanced significantly in 1856 with a $250,000 gift by Maxwell Chambers, making Davidson the wealthiest school south of Princeton. The Chambers Building was raised to honor this blessing. On November 28, 1921, the Chambers Building was annihilated in a flame yet was remade 8 years after the fact with assets gave by a liberal blessing from the Rockefeller family.The Chambers Building keeps on being the essential scholarly expanding on grounds.
