The college was established as the Medical College of Louisiana in 1834 somewhat as a reaction to the reasons for alarm of smallpox, yellow fever and cholera in the United States. The college turned out to be just the second medicinal school in the South, and the fifteenth in the United States at the time. In 1847, the state governing body set up the school as the University of Louisiana, a state funded college, and the law office was added to the college. Hence, in 1851, the college set up its first scholarly office. The principal president decided for the new college was Francis Lister Hawks, an Episcopalian cleric and conspicuous subject of New Orleans at the time.
